10 Peaceful Getaways

THE MORNING LINE "There is a time to be quiet and a time to talk."
— Aung San Suu Kyi

EMBRACE SIMPLICITY IN UMBRIA
Eremito, Italian for hermit, is a new, 14-room property in Umbria geared toward solo travelers who want to explore their monastic side. The renovated 13th-century property is lit primarily by candles, there's no TV or internet and certainly no business center.

LAURENTIAN MOUNTAINS LODGE
Whether you're skiing at Tremblant in the winter or biking/hiking from Bois-des-Filion to Mont-Laurier, a stop at Le Lupin, a log chalet-turned-auberge near Tremblant, is an easy-going charmer amidst the slopes, lakes, forests and villages.

AIRSTREAMS IN MARFA, TEXAS
On the 18-acre grounds of El Cosmico, yurts, tents and teepees, but also vintage trailers for mid-century mavens. Endless horizons and a canopy of stars included.

NEW HOPE LUXE
You could stay on the premises of Pennsylvania's Inn at Bowman's Hill, for your entire visit and not regret it. Yes, it's pricey but the accommodations, service and grounds make the case persuasively.

THE VOLCANIC BEAUTY OF CAPE VERDE
Cesaria Evora was from Cape Verde, the country west of Senegal: 10 islands surrounded by nothing except the Atlantic. Colonized by Portugal, the now-independent country is stable, enjoys moderate temperatures, beautiful beaches, and welcomes visitors warmly. Tourism is on the rise, but it hasn't overwhelmed the natural volcanic beauty. Goa Residencial's simple accommodations allow you to focus on the sun, water, peace.

TO THE SAUGERTIES LIGHTHOUSE
The Saugerties Lighthouse was first illuminated in 1869, got automated in 1954, and fell into disrepair in the next decades. It's now restored and doing double duty as an unconventional bed and breakfast with two bedrooms and some fine views of the Hudson. It's a half-mile walk on an easy trail to get to the B & B. The hard part is getting a reservation.

THE SEYCHELLES' GORGEOUS BEACH
Bird Island is only accessible by small plane, about a 30-minute hop from the Seychelles international airport. Bird Island Lodge is comprised of two dozen bungalows (on the whole island), so you'll certainly see many more birds than humans during your stay. You'll unplug, too. They've got electricity, but no television or phone. Spend your time instead on the distinctly undigital three miles of beaches—some of the planet's loveliest.

A GOOD IMPRESSION
Ten miles north of Ithaca, Juniper Hill is a beautiful and beautifully-run B&B, with an art gallery of American Impressionist paintings and rooms named for painters.

ABOVE BADEN-BADEN
In Baden-Baden, every day is an old-world Sunday and the spiritual center is Brenners Park. For something a little less buttoned-up, Waldcafe is situated a short drive in the hills over Baden-Baden, on a lovely plot of land. Originally a restaurant only, the hotel opened in 2012.

CATSKILL RETREAT
Tibet House has a place in Phoenicia, NY called the Menla Mountain Retreat, which is true to its billing. Situated on 325 acres, there is a spa, private yoga instruction and hiking trails. The meals are vegetarian (though special requests are honored if made in advance).
