Ari Hest

If you want to hear how the soil of New York expresses itself through a rich, pliant, and quickly intoxicating voice, have a listen to Ari Hest's new CD, Story after Story, or better yet, catch him in person at Joe's Pub, 539.8777, on February 27th. (The CD is available at www.arihest.com).

This 23-year-old native New Yorker and NYU grad has recorded three CDs of his own material, increasingly mature speculations on love and loss, in enormously appealing pop-rock melodies with occasional jazz inflections. It's the rasp-to-croon voice, though, that carries with it the influences of New York City, the rock and roll pace, the sway of Village jazz clubs, the power of Broadway and the soul of Harlem.

Mr. Hest is especially persuasive live, so the Joe's Pub gig is a good opportunity to see a talent on the verge. As Aretha might say, go and give him some Ari-Hest-P-E-C-T.

Another emerging talent is playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. See his newest play, Kimberly Akimbo, at Manhattan Theater Club, 581.1212.
