Bars and Clubs

Hot Clubs
Crobar, 530 W. 28th [10th/11th] 212.629.9000. A club on steroids (metaphorically speaking): huge space, huge crowds (nearly 3000 can party together), guest-star DJs, and live acts. Alegria is the more or less monthly gay party on Sunday nights.

Marquee, 289 10th [26th/27th] 646.473.0202. Jason Strauss and Noah Tepperberg's stylish meeting place (with design elements by Philip Johnson) of A-listers. True to new-hip-club form, entrance is precluded by velvet ropes, if not an iron curtain.

One, 1 Little W. 12th [Gansevoort] 212.255.9717. Part of the One Little West 12th restaurant, the lounge areas are beautiful — large, contemporary, candle-lit spaces.

Rumor, 130 W. 3rd [MacDougal/6th] 212.343.0333. This one is a little more democratic in terms of entrance policy. Inside, high design, high energy, and lots of thang-shakin.

Spirit, 530 W. 27th [10th/11th] 212.268.9477. Formerly Twilo, the 35,000-square-foot recent entrant into the West Chelsea club madness has a decidedly different vibe: in addition to all that dancing energy, an all-night spa and organic eats are part of the mix.

Viscaya, 191 7th [21st] 212.675.5980. Another beautiful club, though the aggravating door policy has already drawn criticism.

Worst Cocktail in History
…drum roll, please: And the winner is the New Ringotini perpetrated by Sushi Samba. A dire mix of coconut rum, apple cider, crème de cacao, and pineapple juice, all for $10. Really, gentle reader, there are cheaper emetics out there.

5 Bars with Fireplaces
1. Art Bar, 52 8th [Jane/Horatio] 212.727.0244. By now, an old standby.
2. Key Bar, 432 E. 13th [1st/A] 212.478.3021. Small charmer.
3. Kili, 81 Hoyt [Atlantic/State] Bklyn 718.855.5574. Somehow, hip and cozy.
4. Molly's, 287 3rd [22nd/23rd] 212.889.3361. See below…
5. The Slide, 356 Bowery [Great Jones] 212.420.8885. Stylish gay bar.

Old & New Irish Pubs
Molly's, 287 3rd [22nd/23rd] 212.889.3361. Sawdust on the floors? Check. Guinness served right? Check. Fireplace? Check. Good jukebox? Check. For over 40 years, Molly's has set the standard for Irish pubs in the city.

Lunasa, 126 1st Ave. [6th/7th] 212.228.8580. A sawdust-free Irish pub, done up in warm and enveloping tones (it's not over-designed, though). The Guinness is just right and, when the weather thaws, the backyard is just the place to drink it.

Muy Mario
The estupendo Mr. Batali (with his partner Joe Bastianich) demonstrates that Spain is the new Italy with his recently opened Bar Jamon, 125 E. 17th [Irving] 212.253.2773, the tapas bar that's part of Casa Mono next door. What would you expect from Señor Batali but vigorous Spanish wines and tasty snacks?…Mario isn't the only Espanolophile around. The Access group of City Center, 130 W. 56th [6th/7th] Studio 5, 212.763.1206 ("designed with young professionals in mind…"), will host a Spanish wine and cheese tasting, followed by a flamenco dance lesson. It takes place January 29th from 6-7:45pm and is $20 for non-members.
Sale: Alexander McQueen, 417 W. 14th [9th/Wash] 212.645.1797. Through January, McQueen's fall and winter collections are up to 60% off.

Theatre: Fiddler returns to Broadway, starring Alfred Molina, directed by David Leveaux. Previews begin this Friday at the Minskoff (212.307.7171)…Tony Kushner's Caroline, or Change transfers to Broadway opening at the O'Neill on May 2 (212.239.6200).
