German choreographer and dance-theater innovator Sasha Waltz (Impromptus, 2005 Next Wave; Körper, 2002 Next Wave) returns to BAM with Gezeiten (Tides), a stark, smoldering vision of perseverance in the face of apocalypse. A single room is all that remains from a nameless disaster looming outside. As flames begin to lick the disintegrating floorboards and smoke billows in, Waltz's dancers desperately try to retain their poise, resulting in a heart-stopping work that asks: when all is about to be lost, what keeps hope alive?
