Books for Kids

DonorsChoose, that innovative online charity, has a mission to help public school students get crucial but missing resources. Teachers write about what they need most, post it, and then someone, hopefully, donates to help fulfill the request.

In December, we asked you to raise $1007 for a South Bronx classroom, which you did in a matter of minutes. And so we've committed to making this a feature four times a year. Today's request is for Mrs. D's Classroom in Brooklyn, seeking books for kindergarten and first grade students. Needed: $1,035.

Kindergarten and first grade students cannot check out books from the library due to the fact there aren't enough books for these 250 students.

Our school population has grown so much that we had to put our kindergarten and first grade in an annex two blocks from our main building. While the rooms were totally furnished with carpet and furniture, books for the library were not considered in this budget. I have taken as many books from our main building, ordered as many as our budget would allow, yet I don't even have enough books to allow these beginner readers to check and take home library books.

Whenever I am teaching these babies in the Annex, they are constantly asking when they can take home books. It is heartbreaking to have to tell them not yet. These books will allow me to finally check out books to these excited readers to share with their parents and siblings.

Getting children "hooked on books" is so important in the early elementary grades. You can help these young, eager, excited children to gain a love of reading and the opportunity to choose books that will foster and encourage their love of reading. This in turn will benefit them and help them realize their potential as readers and writers.

We hope you'll take a moment to drop a few dollars into the bucket—it can make a big difference to some young New Yorkers. Click on the green button below for more info and to donate:
