You think you're busy? R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) or "Bucky," as he was called, is best known as the inventor of the geodesic dome. But he was also an architect, lecturer, engineer, mathematician, poet, thinker, futurist, cartographer, and cosmologist. He wrote 28 books, was awarded 25 patents, was an early proponent of renewable energy sources: solar, wind, and wave.
Today, on the 50th anniversary of the patent for the geodesic dome, the Postal Service issues a stamp in his honor, featuring the painting by Boris Artzybasheff that appeared on the cover of Time in 1964.
The Buckminster Fuller Institute, which recently relocated from California to Williamsburg, is hosting a stamp release party this Thursday, July 15 from 11:30am to 2pm at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia [W. 3rd/Bleecker]. Guests will include Jonathan Marvel, great-nephew of the great man, Joshua Arnow, BFI Board President, and the Postmaster of NYC. Suggested fee is $20, RSVP to events@bfi.org or call 718.290.9283.
More RBF: Isamu Noguchi and RBF were friends and you can see the bust that Noguchi did of Fuller at the Noguchi Museum and here…Two local geodesic domes: The aviary at the Queens Zoo, designed by Fuller for the '64 World's Fair, and the New Year's Eve Times Square ball.
