Cheese By Hand

Michael Claypool and his wife, Sasha Davies, will be heading off for a four-month tour into the wilds of not-New-York to interview artisanal cheesemakers for an audio documentary and on-the-road podcasts called Cheese by Hand. They'll be hitting 40 farms in 25 states, including Alaska.

Join them for a fundraiser on Tuesday, April 25th, 6:30-8:30pm, at Vintage New York, 482 Broome [Wooster] 212.226.9463 — you can sample artisanal cheeses, NY wines, as well as hors d'oeuvres from Blue Hill, The Tasting Room, and Mas. $75, payable at the door, but RSVP to rsvp@cheesebyhand.com.

Among the great cheesemakers that Claypool and Davies will visit are Jasper Hill Farm in Vermont, Uplands Cheese Company in Wisconsin, and Mozzarella Company in Texas. Mr. Claypool and Ms. Davies also advise keeping an eye out for Willow Hill in Vermont (these cheeses come into season in May), Bittersweet Plantation Dairy (outside of New Orleans), Cato Corner in Connecticut (Cato sells at Greenmarkets, Murray's, and Artisanal), and Valley Shepherd (available only at Greenmarkets).
The New York Book Club
This book club, created for those of you whose favorite subject is New York, meets each month to discuss a NY book. The next one is tomorrow night, April 19th, 6-8pm at the Tenement Museum Shop, 108 Orchard [Delancey/Broome]. Free, but RSVP at arsilberman@tenement.org. Two books are up: The Empire State Building by John Tauranac and Empire Rising by Thomas Kelly — both authors will be on hand to lead the discussion. Very fitting, too: the Empire turns 75 on May 1st.
