Demoiselle |
When MUG was just a gangly kid (in our pre-web print days), we classed ourselves up with the illustrations of Chesley McLaren. Though her instantly recognizable style has a French accent, we were thoroughly charmed when we first saw her work—a mural on the now-closed Terrance Brennan/Andrew Silverman restaurant Prix Fixe. And after that, she illustrated MUG almost every month.
We got the very same charm blast when we saw what Chesley has been up to recently—her first clothing line, called Demoiselle. In the 20-piece collection, dresses, separates, couture coats, "inspired by the royal court of Louis XIV and Napoleonic military uniforms." The look is, nevertheless, freshly contemporary, though there are engaging little historical touches: a ruffle here, a detachable bustle there.
You can have a look at the Demoiselle collection when Chesley has a trunk show of the 2008 Fall Collection on June 19th, 4-6:30pm, at Yuta Powell, 967 Mad [75th/76th]. RSVP at 212.570.6889.

• Correction: In yesterday's MUG, we botched the name of the director of Broadway's Boeing-Boeing. He is Matthew Warchus, not Matthew Marcus.
