The James Beard House scandal
The San Francisco Chronicle begins a three-part series today on Len Pickell and how his chicanery got himself and the organization into something worse than a pickle.
This should be a hoot: Gael Greene moderates a chat about "the world's most unusual meals" with Mario Batali, Lidia Bastianich, and Fergus Henderson, chef of St. John, the acclaimed London restaurant, and, more to the point, author of the cookbook The Whole Beast — Nose to Tail Eating. It's tonight, 8pm, $25, at the 92nd Street Y, 212.415.5500. Tickets are still available as of this morning.
Next Wednesday, May 11, 6:30-8:30pm, Big Cheese Max McCalman (Picholine and Artisanal) does a cheese tasting, paired with wines from Wˆlffer Estate from Long Island. It takes place at Nolita House, 47 Houston [Mott/Mulberry] 212.625.1712. $45.
Reviews for the reviewer seem to be all over the map. One thing that was bothering us was what seemed to be a disproportionate number of older restaurants being reviewed. We did the math, though. During the 11 months he's been in the chair, he's reviewed 48 restaurants. Of those, 12 hadn't opened recently. Hard to argue that 25% is an unreasonable number. What do you think of his reviews? We're interested in your thoughts.
