Echoing Green

A venture capital firm? Not our beat.

A NYC-based, non-profit venture capital firm (sic) named after a William Blake poem that invests in ideas for social change? Do sit down.

Echoing Green has been around for over twenty years, yet it seems more essential than ever. They're there to get seed money – $28 million, so far, in over 470 projects – "in the hands of the right person at the right time" or to be "the first to invest in an amazing person with an outstanding social change idea."

Those ideas can be social, economic, political, or environmental. The J.U.I.C.E. Project, for instance, is a plan to "combat disease mortality in inner cities by reimagining the corner store as a one-stop shop for nutritious yet affordable food, free exercise training/activities, media/health literacy education, and art programs."

There are a few ways to get involved.

You can make a donation, which helps Echoing Green find and mentor emerging leaders.

Private sector leaders may want to join their Social Investment Council.

And if you have an idea that you think would work well with Echoing Green's mission, you can apply to become one of their fellows.

At a time when so many financial institutions have created cash from their trash (or worse), it's heartening to know about an enterprise that helps create value for communities and helps people do well by doing good.
