First Day New York

On the emotionally fraught scale, the first day of school ranks high for a lot of kids. For children living in NYC shelters, it can be traumatic.

Or joyful. That's the mission of First Day New York: through the generosity and care of fellow New Yorkers, the first day can be a happy one, when children arrive with simple but crucial gear such as new shoes, school supplies, and a backpack.

First Day has no office, no staff, no overhead at all. Every penny goes to helping the kids. You can make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer. We think, though, the most direct and satisfying way is to sponsor a child.

When you do that, you'll get a "mad lib" filled out by your child, telling you a little about him- or herself. Then you shop for a backpack, first-day-of-school outfit, a book, and perhaps write a note of encouragement. The filled backpacks need to get to the organization by August 11th. Details are here.

That's all there is to it. What better way to help kids pull themselves up by their bootstraps than by giving them boots?
