First Day New York
Every Person in New York

On the emotionally fraught scale, the first day of school ranks high for a lot of kids. For children living in NYC shelters, it can be traumatic.

Or joyful. That's the mission of First Day New York: through the generosity and care of fellow New Yorkers, the first day can be a happy one, when children arrive with simple but crucial gear such as new shoes, school supplies, and a backpack.

First Day has no office, no staff, no overhead at all. Every penny goes to helping the kids. You can make a tax-deductible donation or volunteer. This year, they have a found a sponsor for every child.

But they still need money for school uniforms ($25), supplies ($50), and backpacks (filled with a new outfit and shoes). Details are here.

What better way to help kids pull themselves up by their bootstraps than by giving them boots?
