Gear to Go Outfitters
Poll: Brian Williams

Gear to Go Outfitters, 217 Garfield Pl. [7th/ 8th Aves.] 718.399.7848, is a tiny, excellent store that punches above its weight.

That's thanks to the passion that owner Kevin Rosenberg has for hiking, backpacking and just about all things not inside. He's a veteran with a law degree who has been hiking for over 20 years. When he was attending Cardozo, he began taking friends on hikes and realized that NYC stores didn't make it easy to leave the city and hit the trails.

In 2009, he started Gear to Go online, then began selling from a street stand. Two years later, he opened on this Park Slope side street. They sell sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, clothing and tools.

Their try-before-you-buy program allows you to rent, say, a tent, after which you can apply 50% of the rental fee to the purchase of a new one. Service is friendly and they know their stuff. Mr. Rosenberg and his crew teach classes and offer many day hikes and longer guided trips. Next up: a Bear Mountain Snowshoe Hike on Saturday, February 28, $74.95.
