Gypsy of the Year
Flickr Pool Picks

When they held the first Gypsy of the Year show in 1989, they raised $70,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. And every year since then, in the late fall, performers have encouraged donations at the exit doors of Broadway, off-Broadway and touring productions.

The culmination of the drive is two enormously entertaining matinee shows at which gypsies (the affectionate nickname for Broadway's itinerant dancers and singers) get the spotlight. Awards are given for the best performance and for the shows that have raised the most money. Last year, the total raised was $5,229,611.

If you want to see one of the 27th annual Gypsy of the Year shows, they'll take place at the New Amsterdam Theatre, Monday December 7, 4:30pm and Tuesday, December 8 at 2pm. Tickets start at $30.
