Holiday Spirit

A few things you can do at your keyboard to spread the spirit of the season…

Until 5pm today, there's an online auction for the Future Leaders Institute, a school in Harlem founded by a small group of NYC teachers, dedicated to providing an academically rigorous education to students in Harlem. Lots of good stuff up for grabs, including floor seats for the Knicks.

Another online auction is The Lunchbox Auction, sponsored by Gourmet, with proceeds going to the Food Bank and The Lunchbox Fund. Custom lunchboxes, designed by dozens of pooh-bahs, including Mario Batali, Salman Rushdie, Alice Waters, and William Wegman. The lunchbox pictured is from Ruth Reichl, Gourmet's Editor-in-Chief, and includes a generous helping of personal ephemera from Ms. Reichl.

Facebook addicts can help protect and restore the world's rainforest through the site's mini-app called (Lil) Green Patch. As you give and send virtual plants to friends, a portion of ad revenue is funneled to the Adopt an Acre program of The Nature Conservancy.

Over on eBay, there are thousands of things for sale under the rubric World of Good. Each item is tagged with its area of impact, such as preserving a community's traditions, eco-friendly production, and animal welfare.

Help Leave Out Violence (aka LOVE) by viewing a photo gallery of images taken by Canadian youth who have been affected by violence. The Motorola company will do their part if you do yours—browse through all the photos in the gallery and they'll make a $5 donation to LOVE. Their goal is to raise $12,000—and you can put them over the top.
