Azalea, 224 W. 51st [Bway] 212.262.0105. Cooking from both the Amalfi coast and Parma is new incentive for pre-theatre dining.

Hue, 91 Charles [Bleecker] 212.691.4170. Frank Prisinzano steps away from pasta and the East Village in this dramatically designed French and Vietnamese restaurant and lounge. But lose the bouncer/doormen.

Crudo, 54 Clinton [Rivington/Stanton] 646.654.0116. Perfect summer food at this latest addition to Clinton Street's restaurant row: sparkling raw seafood concoctions, sensitively assembled.

Dumonet, 35 E. 76th [Mad] 212.744.1600. Jean-Louis Dumonet brings classic and bistro French fare to the pleasantly genteel surroundings of the Carlyle.

Lever House, 390 Park [53rd] 212.888.2700. Grounding the modish design at the landmark building is a talented chef: Dan Silverman, who used to cook at Alison on Dominick and Union Square Cafe. Opens its doors tonight.

Nice Matin, 201 W. 79th [Amst] 212.873.6423. Now that they've worked out some of the problems at the door, Nice Matin is well on its way to becoming a destination restaurant and an UWS fave.

Shag Bar and Restaurant, 4 Eighth Ave. [Bleecker/W. 12th] 212.242.0220. Abingdon Square meets Austin Powers at this small, groovalicious spot.

WD50, 50 Clinton [Rivington/Stanton] 212.477.2900. Wylie Dufresne's long-aborning follow-up to 71 Clinton is, to date, the big NY food event of 2003.

Westville, 210 W. 10th [W. 4th] 212.741.7971. The space is minimal but Westville offers complete summer-by-the-sea pleasures: hotdogs, corn on the cob, and some more ambitious dishes. Don't miss the butterscotch pudding for dessert.
Two restaurants that haven't materialized yet that we're especially looking forward to: Tom Valenti's new Italian place on W. 75th Street and Katy Sparks' new restaurant, wherever and whenever.
