Moleskine Notebooks

Something low-tech today.

Moleskine pocket journals are loved by many writers and artists. That's because these small, oilcloth-covered notebooks are lightweight, come with an elastic band to keep the book closed, a back-cover pocket, and a bookmark.

And they come with an aura. Hemingway, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Matisse used them. So did Bruce Chatwin, who stocked up on them from an old Parisian stationer before a voyage. The last moleskin producer, a small, family operation in Tours, stopped making them in 1986, but the Italian company Modo & Modo has brought them back (introducing some additional styles, too). Not cheap (about $10 for the pocket size), they're still a wonderfully tactile alternative to sitting with an iBook at Starbucks and they make ideal traveling companions.

Find them at stationers, Barnes and Noble, and art supply stores around town.
