Notes

Restaurant openings: A meal at Nice Matin, 201 W. 79th [Amst] 212.873.6423, should make you feel like you're in shouting distance of the Hotel Negresco. Andy D'Amico, formerly of Sign of the Dove, is the chef…Acqua Pazza 36 W. 52nd [5th/6th] 212.582.6900, winning plaudits for its way with Mediterranean fish…The people behind Barrage are opening a stylish lounge called Therapy, 348 W. 52nd [8th/9th] 212.397.1700, in early May. Look for nibbles to include: lamb chops, shrimp cocktail, seared tuna, and chicken skewers…We loved a firm goat cheese we tasted recently called Midnight Moon (aged a year). Then we figured out why it was so good: it's a new offering from Mary Keehn's Cypress Grove, www.cypressgrovechevre.com. Ms. Keehn also makes the sensational Humboldt Fog, one of our favorites. Midnight Moon is available at many cheese shops around town - we saw it most recently at Whole Foods, 250 7th [24th] 212.924.5969…Two events of note: Alfred Portale, the indefatigably first-rate chef of Gotham Bar and Grill, will be at the James Beard House, www.jamesbeard.org on April 30th (7pm) with a menu that sounds wonderful, including a warm spinach and roast garlic custard, Atlantic halibut with morels, ramps, and petits pois, and roast rack of lamb with fava beans, truffle, and soft polenta. $150 for non-members…If the wines from any region taste like spring, it's the wines from the Loire. A perfect time, then, to go on A Wine Tour of the Loire Valley, a wine-tasting benefiting Share Our Strength. It's on May 5th at 135 W. 18th [6th/7th] 5pm-7pm. Cost is $35 and you can register here…With all the attention the media has given to pizza lately, we're almost pizza-ed out. But we'll make an exception for Sullivan Street Bakery's seasonal Pizza Carciofi, (pizza with artichokes, pictured bottom right). SSB has two locations: 73 Sullivan [Broome/Spring] 212.334.9435 and 533 W. 47th [10th/11th] 212.265.5580…And what's that pink-striped cake (pictured bottom left) all about? Dean and Deluca is selling it - but only online, not in the store. (page 9 in the New and Seasonal section. Note that it only ships Tues-Thurs). It's made by a San Francisco pastry chef with dark chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, vanilla buttercream and red- and pink- tinted white chocolate. The cake is seven inches in diameter and costs, are you sitting down?, $130. But it is a looker…
Best Cellars, 1291 Lex [87th] 212.426.4200, always has on hand some of the best wine deals in town. But we're particularly taken lately with their Beyond the Best selection. It features "a collection of the best wine values from around the world, irrespective of price."
