Pakistani Dossier

A corrupt government, free-range militants, and the bomb. Say hello to Pakistan, the most combustible place in the world.

Art
At the Aicon Gallery, 35 Great Jones [Lafayette/Bowery] 212.725.6092, the focus is on Indian and Pakistani artists. You can see Threshold, a group show up now, and browse the site to learn about some interesting talents such as Farida Batool, who created the image above.

Food
It's not about tea at the Pakistan Tea House, 176 Church [Duane/Reade] 212.240.9800. Instead, decent, cheap Pakistani food with no ambience to interfere… Most of the action, though, is in Jackson Heights, including much-loved Kabab King, 73-01 37th Rd. [73rd St.] 718.457.5857.

Talk
Juan Cole, history professor, author, and president of the Global Americana Institute, will be at the Asia Society on March 17th, 7pm, discussing his new book Engaging the Muslim World. On Mr. Cole's website, Informed Comment, a guest writer addresses Why Solving Pakistan is the Pivot for Obama's South Asian Security Strategy.

Embroidery
Decoratively stitched cloth has a long history in India and Pakistan. See some of the beautiful handiwork at the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 7th [17th] 212.620.5000, in a show called Color & Light, through May 11th.

Short Film
You can watch an excellent short film, the Oscar-nominated Little Terrorist about a young Pakistani Muslim boy who crosses the Indian border chasing a soccer ball. Available on iTunes.

Novel
Out of the events leading to the plane crash that killed General Zia in 1988, Mohammed Hanif has created the exuberant farce A Case of Exploding Mangoes, in paperback as of May 5.
