Patron of the New

Shot Down in Ecuador, Jr.

That's the name of the boutique that Mary and Rhoda visit in a Mary Tyler Moore show episode when Mary dates a younger man and decides she needs to go for a hipper look. The ridiculous and funny name (later adopted by an actual rock band) is perfect for that ridiculous and pretentious shop: its low-affect employee, capricious opening hours, minimal stock of dubious provenance.

Patron of the New, 151 Franklin St. [Hudson/Varick] 212.966.7144, has a little of the Shot Down in Ecuador, Jr. in it. It takes, let's say, a certain amount of self-confidence to include a diktat in your store name. On the other hand, the intended audience, those in front of the fashion-forward, likely have a higher tolerance for the overweening. The patron of the house is Al Abayan, who used to run the NYC outpost of Tokyo's Number (N)ine, which has (n)ow (c)losed.

In spite of all that, Al Abayan's dramatic and airy boutique, opened in 2011, delivers the goods.

Unless you're mainlining fashion, you're not going to recognize many of the designer names carried here, which is the point. It's a fascinating mix of styles (not all high-end, either)—clothes from Holland-born designer Josephus Melchior Thimister, L.A.'s Denis Colomb, Nicolas Andreas Taralis, Kron by KronKron of Iceland, and Jessica Trosman from Argentina.

Even if you're more of the J.Crew type, you may still love the accessories: Christian Tortu candles, Cousu de Fil soaps, and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces from Monies in Copenhagen.

The staff may have other commitments while you're shopping but don't let that deter you from having a look at fashion's latest moves.
