Return Engagement:
Rogue's Gallery

Today, the start of Return Engagement, an occasional series of MUG articles, galleries and roundups we think are worth a second look.

We're intrigued by these faces. They seem very present to us, though the photographs were taken in the early years of the 1900s. The people are well-groomed and well-dressed, some are attractive. And yet they all turn out to be murderers, robbers and/or some kind of serious trouble.

The mug shots, from the Crime in New York 1850-1950 Image Collection, were part of the Papers of Lewis Lawes. Lawes was the warden of Sing Sing from 1920-1941.
