Rolling Jubilee
Every Person in New York

Got to love this.

Historically, jubilees were religious years in which slaves received freedom and debts were forgiven. In that spirit, Strike Debt, an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, has developed the Rolling Jubilee project.

Rolling Jubilee is a 501(c) nonprofit formed to enter the speculative debt buying market, in which individual debt is bundled and sold by banks to collection agencies. In this case, Rolling Jubilee buys the debt bundles for pennies on the dollar, and then cancels the debt. Perfectly legal.

If you donate $1, they can abolish $20 worth of debt. Donate $20 and you'll eliminate someone's $400 of debt.

The project will have its launch Thursday night at Le Poisson Rouge. Performers will include Janeane Garofalo, Lizz Winstead, Hari Kondabolu, David Rees, John Cameron Mitchell, Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and many more. It's sold out but the event will be livestreamed on the Rolling Jubilee website.

Jason Polan started Every Person in New York in March of 2008. He plans on working on the project until it is finished. Look for Every Person in New York on Tuesdays in MUG and daily at Jason's site.
