Rug and Carpet Cleaning
Every Person in New York

Wall-to-wall carpets are generally steam cleaned. A machine with a nozzle sprays warm water and shampoo onto the rug and then vacuums it back up. Light-colored or very soiled carpets are cleaned with a rotary brush.

Carpets or rugs with unstable weaves or backings which might shrink are dry cleaned. Flat-weave rugs like needlepoints, kilims and dhurries are also dry cleaned. If a rug needs to be dry cleaned, it's usually best to have the cleaner take it out.

With all floor coverings, problems can arise. If there is mildew in the rug, for instance, removing it can make holes apparent. Some oriental carpets use unstable dyes so they may run. A good carpet cleaner does dye testing to determine what cleaning method to use. Prices are computed by square footage and type of rug.

For rug and carpet cleaning, as well as repair, MUG likes Cleantex, 212.283.1200, which has been in business for more than 75 years. They also do upholstery and drapery cleaning… Renotex, 212.255.4600, has been in business since 1945. They had a hand in developing many of the cleaning techniques in use today.

Doing it yourself? Your best bet is New York Floor Supplies, 2282 2nd [117th] 212.369.7200.
