The Container Store

A good news/bad news story.

The good news is that Texas specialty retailer The Container Store is coming to the Upper East Side. The bad news is that it will be taking over the building currently occupied by The Frick Collection, formerly the Henry Clay Frick House.

Kip Tindell, The Container Store's CEO, announced on Friday that it will open its third New York City location at 1 East 70th Street in spring 2014. Tindell said, "We are delighted that New Yorkers have embraced The Container Store with such enthusiasm and we look forward to providing Upper East Siders with their very own location."

The Frick is expected to sell its collection of masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and others to the nearby Metropolitan Museum.

"I love The Container Store," said longtime UES resident Lani Haber, "and we need it badly in this neighborhood. Anyway, we're lousy with museums."

Eli Zabar, owner of E.A.T. at 1062 Madison Avenue, said, "I think it will be a plus for the whole area."

Tipping its hat to the museum that it will replace, The Container Store says picture hangers and hardware will be on sale for three months after opening.
