Culture
Tibet House, 22 W. 15th [5th/6th] 212.807.0563, is the first place to look for all things Tibetan: meditation, classes, retreats, and exhibitions. On Wednesday, September 29th, 6pm, Pema Rinzin begins a 9-week series on The Fundamentals of Tibetan Art.

Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, 338 Lighthouse Avenue SI 718.987.3500. Though it was founded in 1945, this museum's collection of art and artifacts is still among the city's better-kept secrets. Their annual Tibetan Festival will be held on Sunday, October 3rd, noon-5pm. Jacques Marchais, by the way, was actually Edna Coblentz, originally an actress, who developed an interest in the region, became a gallerist, acquired a large collection of art, and founded the museum.

At the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 W. 17th [7th] 212.620.5000, starting October 6th: Embodying the Holy, an exploration of icons in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Tibetan Buddhism.

Six leading Tibetan artists talk about their work at the Latse Contemporary Tibetan Cultural Library, 132 Perry [Greenwich St./Wash] 212.367.8490, on Thursday, October 7th, in a program called Beyond the Himalayas: New Horizons for Tibetan Art.

Movie
Tibet in Song, playing at Cinema Village, is the deeply affecting story of Ngawang Choephel, who wrote and directed the movie, and his efforts to preserve Tibetan music. His arrest by the Chinese government was perhaps inevitable, given the current state of affairs. After being imprisoned for more than six years, Choephel was released, in part through international pressure. The film chronicles the events, reflecting Tibet's political repression and its indomitable spirit.
