songwriters… Songwriters known and not — and those who like hearing them sing in an intimate setting — have plenty of reason to cheer the debut of the new Shade Tree series. Not only will it feature songwriters in small venues, the price is right, too: $12. First up, Jesse Harris (pictured), who won a Grammy for his song "Don't Know Why" recorded by Norah Jones as well as a talented songwriter from England named Susan Enan. Ben Edgerton will be on hand to introduce and play a few songs as well. It takes place on Sunday, May 7th, 8pm, at Theater 80, 80 St. Marks [1st/2nd] 212.352.3101. Tickets.

photography… At the Foley Gallery, 547 W. 27th [10th/11th] 212.244.9081, is a solo show of Rosalind Solomon's exceptional black and white photographs called American Pictures from Chapalingas. You can read more about Ms. Solomon, whose work is at major museums all over the world, on her website.



tai chi… It's World Tai Chi Day this Saturday and there's the 7th annual gathering in Central Park of two or three hundred people to do Tai Chi together, followed by exhibitions. It starts at 9:30am on the East Meadow at 5th and 97th. Free. Rain date is May 20.



book… Five Flights Up and Other New York Apartment Stories by Toni Schlesinger (Princeton, $24.95), is a collection of Ms. Schlesinger's Village Voice columns, chronicling men living in pods, the 105-pound pig that naps with its owners, and other crazy tales of the city.



movie… Water, written and directed by Deepa Mehta, is set in colonial India, focusing on the residents of an ashram, where widows spend the rest of their lives, and an act of rebellion fomented there. As detailed on the film's website, the production itself stirred violent controversy among Hindu fundamentalists and a production shutdown of years until filming could secretly resume in Sri Lanka. Opens tomorrow.
