more readings… On Wednesday, December 13th, 6:30pm, an evening with highly-esteemed Irish author Edna O'Brien at Symphony Space, 2537 Bway [95th]. Tickets are $26 and $21.


festival… Emerging independent filmmakers, animators, and artists using film have a showcase for work which focuses on personal and artistic expression (as opposed to more commercial endeavors). It's called the Single Reel Film & Video Festival and it takes place on Tuesday, December 12th, 7pm, at the Culture Project, 45 Bleecker [Laf/Bowery].


screening… Tonight at 7:30pm, Makor, 35 W. 67th [CPW/Col] 212.601.1000, screens Contested Streets: Breaking New York City Gridlock and Grand Street. The first looks at how the city continues to cede public space to cars. The six-minute Grand Street looks at what happened when the director, Ian Rosenberg, set up a camera outside his apartment building at Grand and Pitt, and recorded a 12-hour stretch. Directors of both movies will be on hand for a post-screening discussion. $15.


head's up… Broadway's most talked-about performance this season is surely Christine Ebersole's in the musical Grey Gardens. By early June, she'll be clutching a Tony for it. Ms. Ebersole is giving a holiday concert at Birdland on Sunday, December 17th, 8pm. Tickets are $40 plus a $10 minimum.
