movie Fun post-apocalyptic times: Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer is based on the French graphic novel about the last people alive on earth, consigned to a perpetually moving train, and the stratified society within. OK, maybe not fun (the violence is frequently gruesome), but an astonishing work. Plus: Tilda Swinton.



music Tickets go on sale at noon tomorrow for the Slow Club show at Bowery Ballroom on September 17. The genre-straddling (alt/dance/pop/folk) British duo has a new album out in July. Their first was Yeah, So, followed by Paradise.



theater Summertime is generally the theater's fallow season but wherever Patti LuPone is, the theater is lush and green. And the great performer will be at 54 Below from July 21 through August 2, carrying a torch.

fri-sun: the 16th annual del close marathon features 50+ hours of non-stop improv shows across 8 stages. $30 festival pass, $10-20/show.


fri-9/1: cool off as nyc's 50+ free outdoor pools are open for the season! be sure to bring your own padlock for the lockers and check the rules before you go.



sat 12-5pm: recess on governors island: 32 teams compete in an outdoor badminton challenge, plus a few courts will be open for public non-competitive play. there'll also be free bike rides, food vendors, a beer/wine tent, more. colonel's row, free admission.



sat 7pm-midnight: the fifth annual lumen video and performance art festival features 50+ artist installations taking advantage of the environment of atlantic salt company's waterfront dock in staten island. the location is a short 15-minute walk from the st. george ferry terminal, and a free shuttle from the ferry is also available. free admission ($5 suggested donation).


sat-sun: the origami convention folds its way into town with an exhibition at fit. $5.


sat-sun say farewell to an nyc institution. the chelsea flea market antiques garage closes after this weekend. on the plus side, most of the vendors are relocating to nearby markets.
