concerts… We go through periods of wanting to see every performer at Joe's Pub, and other times, not so much. Right now, to our ears, prime listening. Tomorrow and Saturday, 7pm, Lucy Kaplansky, the clinical psychologist-turned-singer/songwriter, performs. She's a longtime favorite of ours for her haunting tunes and trenchant lyrics…On May 23rd, rising star Kiff heads this way from San Francisco, bringing his vibrant pop/rock songs and terrific voice to Lafayette Street…Also coming up at Joe's, Laurie Anderson, Howard Fishman, and Jill Sobule.



indie rock… Friday & Saturday: Mogwai and Torche dynamically deliver at Webster Hall.Monday: Punk rock's Sonny Kay fronts his new band Year Future at Knitting Factory. Just announced: 6/30 The Futureheads, French Kicks. 8/2 Sleater-Kinney.



whiskers championship… We wrote about the World Beard Championships last year, but now exciting news! The downy, the woolly, the bristly, the furry, and the fluffy are gathering for the NYC Beard and Moustache Championships on Tuesday, May 16th, 8pm, $12 in advance, at the Knitting Factory. All you muttonchops mavens, Van Dyke disciples, and French Fork fanatics, go show your love.



reading… Another in the Progressive Reading Series takes place at Galapagos Artspace, 70 N. 6th [Kent/Wythe] Wburg 718.782.5188, on May 15, 8pm, with proceeds going to progressive Congressional candidates. This one will feature Mary Gaitskill (pictured), David Rakoff, Amanda Stern, Rick Moody, and Jim Shepard, and will be hosted by Stephen Elliott. June's reading will feature Jonathan Franzen, Ariel Levy, Malcolm Gladwell, Sean Wilsey, and Colson Whitehead.
