art… At the Chinese Contemporary, 535 W. 24th [10th/11th] 212.366.0966, major (and censored) artist Huang Rui has an installation called "Texts are the Legacy of Great Thought!". Huang Rui deconstructs the Communist Manifesto quite literally by encasing the iron typset for each of its pages in a wooden frame.


indie rock… Thursday: Oxford Collapse (one of our very favorite bands!) bring their cheerful spazz pop to Union Hall in Brooklyn. Friday: The beloved Bright Eyes begin their run of seven consecutive shows this Friday night at Town Hall…Just announced…8/6: I'm From Barcelona. 9/7: Bill Callahan (aka smog).


talk… Suzan-Lori Parks, Pulitzer Prize-winner for Topdog/Underdog, will be at Hue-man Bookstore, 2319 Fred. Douglass [125th] 212.665.7400, 6pm. Ms. Parks, who also wrote 365 Days/365 Plays, will talk about creativity and inspiration.


movie… We're always drawn to the underdog, and what could be more of a cinematic underdog than Once? It's a small, contemporary musical love story set in Ireland that won the Audience Award at Sundance.

Grace Periods
