If the movie, with the dreamiest cast imaginable, is even half as good as the trailer… Just opened: Joaquin Baca's The Brooklyn Star in Williamsburg. Baca was a partner in Momofuku but don't go expecting anything similar. It's southern food here – things like Dr. Pepper ribs, BBQ catfish, chicken and dumplings, and smothered pork chops. Buttermilk biscuits, too, of course.

photography… In 1945, major French fashion designers (Lanvin, Schiaparelli, Balmain, et al.) created outfits for 230 two-foot dolls, shown at an exhibition that then traveled the world. After that, the dolls pulled a disappearing act for nearly fifty years. The dolls made a comeback in 1990, returned to France, and were photographed by the late fashion and art photographer David Seidner. Fifteen of the color images are on display at ICP in a show called Paris Fashions – 1945. The dolls are memorable and the images every bit as much or more so.

restaurants/design… Join some heavy hitters in the restaurant design world AvroKO, Glen Coben, and LTL Architects along with the gifted chef Paul Liebrandt, for a discussion of how the drapes match the carp. It takes place at the Municipal Art Society on Tuesday, June 2nd, 6pm. Fifty bucks gets you cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and the panel discussion. Details.

bookLast Night in Montreal, by Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based Emily St. John Mandel, may turn out to be the sleeper hit of the summer and certainly marks a notable debut. It is, loosely speaking, about how childhood rarely resolves neatly into adulthood and going back can sometimes be the only way to go forward. Join Ms. Mandel at the book launch on Tuesday, June 2nd, 7pm, at Word in Brooklyn. You can read an excerpt of the novel on the author's website.

architecture… The work of major Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann is quickly disappearing as growth in the country does not include much honoring the recent past. Understandable in some respects, given the two decades of civil war, but even Mr. Vann's drawings, almost all of them, are gone. As part of The Vann Molyvann Project, American architecture students will travel to Phnom Penh to work with Cambodian counterparts to document his remaining work. Hear more from the project's director on Wednesday, June 3rd, 6:30pm, at Tyler Rollins Fine Art, 529 W. 20th [10th/11th] 212.229.9100. Free, though donations are much needed.

out of town… Getting to Tokyo doesn't get much cheaper: $656 RT (plus $90 in taxes), on Continental, good June through August.

theater… People are talking about Theresa Rebeck's new play Our House at Playwrights Horizons. It's a timely look at the media, reality TV, and a country that's all too easily distracted. Directed by Michael Mayer, playing now through June 21st.
