At this particular moment, is music that makes you feel good indulgent or indispensable? We'd argue the latter and consider The Royalties (pictured above) our strongest case. This Norwegian trio is a joyful noise of free-wheeling hat-tips conflating many decades of pop music. They're performing as part of the CMJ Marathon at Spike Hill, 184 Bedford [N.6/N.7] Bklyn 718.218.9737 on Saturday, 8pm, and at Public Assembly, 70 N. 6th [Kent/Wythe] Bklyn 718.384.4586, on October 30th, 8pm. iTunes samples here.

photography… Opening at Sideshow Gallery, 319 Bedford [S.2/S.3] Bklyn 718.486.8180, on Saturday, 6pm, two dozen or so photographers contribute to Battlespace: Unrealities of War, Photographs from Iraq and Afghanistan 2002-2007. The images are horrific (and be warned—a few are extremely graphic), eerie, and incredibly moving.

moviesThe Universe of Keith Haring is a new documentary opening Friday at Cinema Village, featuring Jeffrey Deitch, Grace Jones, Madonna, Yoko Ono, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, David LaChapelle, Kenny Scharf, Andy Warhol, and Junior Vasquez—archival footage and interviews of and about the late artist. It's directed by Christina Clausen, who will be on hand after Friday's 7:15pm showing for a Q & A.

jazz… MUG is music-heavy this week, and how could we not be with so many talented musicians playing around town? Jazz vocalist, Amy Cervini, a Canadian export, knows how to wrap her pure, warm voice around every musical phrase that comes her way. She'll be at 55 Bar, 55 Christopher [7th] 212.929.9863, on October 29th, 7pm, fronting her band ACQ. She'll also be at The Blue Note on November 30th (two brunch shows), performing a tribute to Blossom Dearie.

theater… A peek behind the curtain is always fun, but a new web series takes it one step further. Called American Buffalo: Backstage, the videos interview cast, crew, and creative team during the rehearsal process of the upcoming revival of David Mamet's play, starting previews October 31st. The show stars John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer, and Haley Joel Osment. Check out the videos here.
