videos ‣ Two videos of NY: Metropolis – A New York City Timelapse by Will Boisture and Seasons on the Terrace, created for the Central Park Conservancy. Both are sublime.
indie rock ‣ Friday: Star Slinger brings the big time beats to 285 Kent. Monday: The dance party of the year is at Public Assembly tonight. Just Announced… 12/20 - 12/27: Yo La Tengo. 1/24: Nada Surf.
photography ‣ Gilles Larrain: Idols opens at Steven Kasher Gallery, 521 W. 23rd [10th/11th] 212.966.3978, on November 2nd. For those of you born in the 1970s (or later), go see what the downtown renegades were up to, posing in Larrain's storied studio, while you were in swaddling. Awesome stuff. A reissue of the 1973 Idols book has just been released by powerHouse Arena.
jazz ‣ Here are the numbers: 23 nights, 10 different bands, 30 jazz greats, a 50-year career, his 70th birthday. That's all the 411 you need about the Chick Corea retrospective taking place at the Blue Note, except that it starts 11/1. Holy moly!
talk ‣ The great filmmaker Errol Morris (The Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line) sits down with Paul Holdengraber at the NYPL, November 2nd, 7pm, $25, to discuss what kinds of truth photography reveals. Mr. Morris has a new book called Believing is Seeing: Observations on the Mysteries of Photography in which the director looks at documentary photographs—from Gettysburg, the Great Depression, and the Crimean war, among others—with a questioning eye.
biking ‣ On days like this, getting out on your bike may not be so much fun. Check out a CompuTrainer class at Ride Brooklyn, 468 Bergen [5th/Flatbush] 718.857.7433, where you can stay in and head out on a virtual course (one hour, $25), tracking things like distance, cadence, speed, and heart rate.
