I Lift My Lamp

This is evil. What is happening in our country is evil. We couldn't sleep last. You, too? It helped, a little, to see others on Twitter:

At 2:23am, Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) tweeted

I can't sleep. I should sleep. Lying here staring into this blue light is not good, not helpful, and will free no children. But I can't sleep.

At 2:41am, Steve Schmidt (@SteveSchmidtSES) tweeted

29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life. Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump."

Then we found a tweet from Alexis Goldstein (@alexisgoldstein) that said this:

I made a list of concrete actions we can take to fight to #KeepFamiliesTogether. From calls to donations to inspiration on direct actions to marches to donating, there's something for everyone! If this is helpful, share with your networks!

Here is her list:

Beautiful people,

Parents are being ripped from their children as they apply for asylum in the United States. What can we do? Here are a few ideas.

(Pick just ONE and start there!)

MAKE CALLS
The House is expected to vote on two anti-immigrant bills on Thursday, June 21st: one by Rep. Goodlatte and another by Speaker Ryan. Neither bill addresses the administration's policy of separating families, and neither bill fixes the administration's decision to end DACA.

Why the Paul Ryan Bill is bad
Why the Goodlatte bill is bad

Call the Congressional Switchboard and hit "1" for the House after entering in your zip code: 202-224-3121. Click here for a very helpful call script from the folks at Indivisible that will tell you what to say!

There is also an ask for your Senators, if they're Republicans, to get on the Keeping Families Together Act. (All the Democrats are already on it). Here's a script for that call!

TAKE DIRECT ACTION
Across the country, people are taking brave and creative action to say NO to the baby jails.

>>> In Portland, OR, a vigil at an ICE facility has turned into a two-day long occupation #OccupyICEPDX that is surrounding the facility and blocking their work deporting families. They have a fundraising page here.

>>> In Washington D.C., members of DC's Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and DC's IWW group confronted the family separation-defending DHS Secretary Nielsen as she ate dinner in…I kid you not…a Mexican restaurant. Watch the full video on Facebook or Twitter, and read DSA's statement about it here.

>>> On June 30th, in Washington D.C. but also hundreds of cities and towns across the U.S., we'll march to say NO to Family Separation. Find an event here.

>>> Are you serious about wanting to take more direct actions in your area? Sign up to get alerted for events from the group Mijente. (@conmijente on Twitter)

GET INFORMED
There is NO LAW forcing families to be separated. This is a Trump policy. Here's two very helpful factsheets from Kids in Need of Defense:

1. Family Separation: Myth vs Fact
2. Flores Settlement: Myth vs Fact

Another good thing to do is find out where people are detained in the United States. Here is the most up-to-date map of the U.S. immigration detention system, by Freedom for Immigrants.

SIGN AND SHARE PETITIONS
• The ACLU and MomsRising have petitions to Sec. Nielsen.
Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) also have a new petition out to the Department of Homeland Security.
No More Money for ICE and CBP!

GIVE MONEY
A church in Texas is helping to welcome immigrants provisionally cleared by CBP. Below is their amazon wishlist where you can buy blankets, Advil, baby food, and other needed items: Sacred Heart Amazon Wishlist. [Ed: This page is not currently available.]

Or, donate directly to organizations leading this work on the ground and nationally:
National Immigrant Justice Center
Kids in Need of Defense (KIND)
UndocuBlack Network
United We Dream

FIND ALLIES IN YOUR COMMUNITY AND GET TO WORK TOGETHER
Remember, courage is contagious. Here's a good way to find organizations in YOUR AREA already doing this work, so you can join them!

Keep up the fight. If everyone who wants to do more does so, we'll start to send waves of change across the nation.

Love and light and civil rights,
Alexis
