Their show, Compass: Folk Art in Four Directions, is open through March at the South Street Seaport Museum.

At Fisher Heritage, 305 E. 61st [1st/2nd] 212.838.2596, a large selection of antique quilts, plus rugs, blankets, and other American folk art items. But it's the quilts that are the first love here. You don't have to make an appointment, but calling ahead is appreciated.

Basketmaking gets taken to a whole new level by Nancy Moore Bess. Her affinity for Japan has enhanced the Shaker-like simplicity of some of her gorgeous designs.

Specializing in American and French antiques for over 40 years, Judith and James Milne no longer have bricks and mortar in the city, but you can shop from their beautiful website, make use of their home design services or visit their store, run by their daughter, in Kingston, NY… Bernard and S. Dean Levy, 24 E. 84th [5th/Mad] 212.628.7088, have been selling American and English antiques since 1901. Beautiful pieces, friendly staff.

In addition to what's on view in its American Wing in the way of paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts, the Met's Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art displays American fine art and decorative objects that would be hidden in storage. They're arranged by material… At the New-York Historical Society, the Henry Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture showcases 40,000 items.

The Pier Antiques Show this year is March 16-17.
