MUG Needs Your Support!

Aretha Franklin for the win. Her new album, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, will be out October 21. The 72-year-old's version of Adele's Rolling in the Deep (which turns into a mashup with Ain't No Mountain High Enough) is hot, and she threw it down when she performed it live on Letterman. The album will have Arethafied versions of People, Midnight Train to Georgia, I Will Survive and At Last.

The Queen of Soul has shared the microphone with dozens of singers throughout the decades (Jewels In The Crown: All-Star Duets With the Queen), taken hits by others and indelibly reinterpreted them, and even done impressions of her fellow performers, as she does here (and part 2), in which she sings in the styles of Mavis Staples, Gladys Knight and Diana Ross (note the impish breath Franklin exhales before funneling down into the Ross timbre for the first verse of Ain't No Mountain High Enough at 6:10 into the video). Even when she's not performing a duet, there's a call-and-response arc to other singers and songs throughout Franklin's career.

While we're waiting for the new album to drop, here are some duet videos that are tiding us over:
Aretha and Mavis Staples Oh Happy Day
Aretha and Lou Rawls At Last
Aretha and Al Green Freeway of Love
Aretha and Smokey Robinson Just to See Her
Aretha and Tom Jones See Saw
Aretha and Tony Bennett How Do You Keep the Music Playing
An Aretha/Murphy Brown duet during which the Queen of Soul utters the immortal line, "Now, listen, let's get one thing straight: I'm not Martha and you ain't no Vandella."
