Argentinean Dossier


A noteworthy group of Argentinean artists have work on exhibit at the Consulate General of Argentina, 12 W. 56th [5th/6th] that leads up to an event this week. On Wednesday at the Consulate, 6pm-9:30pm, an evening of art, wine, and a silent auction. Tickets are $20. Auction items will include a trip to Buenos Aires, Catena and other wines, and Proenza Schouler clothing. The artwork has been donated by the artists and all proceeds will go to artist scholarships at ProyectArte, a NYC-based nonprofit that, among other things, helps educate and develop promising teenage artists at its school in Buenos Aires. Major Latin music producer Gustavo Santaolalla is behind the Bajofondo Tango Club, a group whose sound is a mashup of musical styles, including tango and electronica. They've got two albums out and the sound will just keep growing on you.


Through December 14th, "Landscapes: Urban, Interior, and Natural" at Susan Eley Fine Art, 46 W. 90th (by appointment). There are works from three artists, including Leando Artigala, born in Buenos Aires, who shows his 2003 images of the Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia.


Fans of suspense films should catch The Aura, directed by Fabián Bielinsky, who died earlier this year at the age of 47. Much of it is set in a Patagonian forest, where an epileptic taxidermist finds himself isolated and confronted by mystery and violence. Bielinsky's masterful technique is to ratchet up tension without increasing the pace. At the IFC
