Every Person in New York

At Chisholm Larsson 145 8th [17th/ 18th] 212.741.1703, you'll find posters. Ben Shahn's Eugene McCarthy peace poster. From the 1970s, Beverly Sills at New York City Opera. Irresistible travel seductions from countries and from airlines.

There's a Bernard Villemot from the 1960s that manages to make power lines both alluring and scary, along with a new acquisition by M. Villemot that's less scary but still appealing. Political messages hang side by side with ones for Dubonnet and Guinness.

Founded in 1974 by Robert Chisholm, the Chelsea store has over 60,000 posters in the inventory, including 20,000 for films, all originals. There are so many styles, subjects and lenses with which to see the world that a visit to Chisholm Larsson is invariably a pleasure.

Mr. Chisholm has an affection for Polish posters and it's easy to see why. That country's Tootsie poster, for instance, gives the film a gravitas it does not have, but the visual is striking.

Jason Polan started Every Person in New York in March of 2008. He plans on working on the project until it is finished. Look for more at Jason's site and his book Every Person in New York.
