Classical, Say Hello to Electronica

We've told you before about the Metropolis Ensemble – the hippest gang in classical music.

Part of what makes them so interesting is their willingness to look beyond classical music for inspiration. Earlier this year, they teamed up with the Groanbox Boys, a roots band. This Wednesday, 6:30-9:30pm, they'll unfold a cool program called New Music 101: Intro to Electronica at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker [Sullivan/Thompson].

The evening is conceived in three parts: a real-time composing system using iPhones (they'll hand out the iPhones) that will enable you to compose and conduct live (see image below and learn more here [PDF]). There will be two classitronica works by composer Jakub Ciupinski, and an after-party that incorporates an invention by Mr. Ciupinski made up of two theremins and a laptop that allows hand movements to beat the band. You will want one.

The good folks at the Metropolis have offered MUG readers a two-for-one ticket discount using the code 2for1. That will also score you two free drink tickets. Table and bar seating tickets are $40, before the discount.

You can also get a free download of a work by Mr. Ciupinksi called The Architect's Brother here.
