Dinosaurs
Every Person in New York

Today is National Dinosaur Day, though some mark the day on June 1. It's all good.

Two new books offer surveys of this long chapter in the history of our planet. The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World by Steve Brusatte and Dinosaurs Rediscovered: The Scientific Revolution in Paleontology by Michael J. Benton are both great reads. Why should kids have all the fun? This stuff is fascinating!

The kids will also like the new Dinosaur Safari at the Bronx Zoo through November 3.

"A young paleontologist may have discovered a record of the most significant event in the history of life on Earth." Okay, you have our attention. Read Douglas Preston's article The Day the Dinosaurs Died from this past March in the New Yorker about the asteroid that created the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatan Peninsula.

German photographer Christian Voigt has a new series of dino images, shot at various natural history museums.

You can spend time with the dinosaurs of Riverside Park, but heading out of the city, in nearby Leonia, NJ, is Field Station: Dinosaurs, an outdoor exhibit of 32 life-size animatronic dinosaurs…Further afield, the Smithsonian in D.C. opens their new fossil hall on June 8, with the return of the Nation's T. rex…Animatronic dinosaurs have just arrived at the Buffalo Zoo—the exhibition opens May 18.

More: Raising the Dinosaur Giant with Sir David Attenborough on Netflix…Out June 10, Assembling the Dinosaur: Fossil Hunters, Tycoons, and the Making of a Spectacle by Lukas Rieppel…And the legend is true: a Dinosaur with Bat Wings

Jason Polan started Every Person in New York in March of 2008. He plans on working on the project until it is finished. Look for more at Jason's site and his book Every Person in New York.
