Donors Choose
Every Person in New York

As we do once a semester or so, MUG is asking you to help a NYC classroom through DonorsChoose. We're asking in spite of the recession, but because of it, too. There's just not enough money allocated to provide the number of books needed by each city classroom.

Please support any of these Donors Choose projects.

Brooklyn Bookworms
I am currently an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher. I teach in a high needs New York middle school. The focus of my classroom is to create life-long readers. My students are diverse learners and I need a variety of books to put in my library to serve all of my students' reading levels. Inspiring students to find their love of reading is a difficult task to do, especially when we are competing with iPods, video games, and the Internet. Students learn a wide variety of reading skills through novels. My students need their interest in reading sparked and ignited more than ever before. The students will be introduced to new genres and hopefully through these novel studies, I will spark new reading interests! [$122 needed]

We Are in Need of Books
Have you ever wanted to enjoy books and reading but had none? My students love to read and are just learning to read properly. However, there are no books in the classroom that are on their reading level. To become good readers they need good books. Please help them as they need support greatly. The children at my school need your support greatly. Many have a parent that is or has been incarcerated. Many of my students come from foster homes as well as homeless shelters. In spite of the great poverty and crime in this area, my students are loving, caring hard working students. They are the sort of children you care about and wish good things for. They are wonderful and really but really do need a support. [$465 needed]

Our Scholars Are Devouring Our Books!
Most of the scholars in our classroom have read all of the books in our library! If you have ever had trouble finding a book to read, you know how they feel. My students are amazing young women who love to read and get lost in fictional stories. They are in the 5th grade and have incredibly curious minds. They are challenging themselves to read at least 25 books this school year. And many of them are already nearing that goal. My students drive their own reading motivation, they researched and proposed a list of books to add to our library that would not only interest them, but challenge their reading as well. [$514 needed]

Books for Passionate Readers
Do you remember the first time you got excited about reading? I teach a terrific group of third graders at a small elementary school in the Bronx. Our school is expanding slowly and my class will be the first Third Grade for our school. Because we are expanding, third grade is "new" in our school. Because of deep cuts to school budgets across New York City, we need some help to secure classroom books and other resources. These materials will help us work for the whole year. [$205 needed]

Jason Polan started Every Person in New York in March of 2008. He plans on working on the project until it is finished. Look for Every Person in New York on Tuesdays in MUG and daily at Jason's site.
