Electricians are licensed by the Dept. of Buildings. Licensing is a long process, and the rules governing electricians are byzantine. That's why a lot of work is done by people who don't have a license. While you might save a few dollars in the short run using an unlicensed electrician, the risks and liability just aren't worth it. You also want them carrying workman's comp and liability insurance in case they're injured on your job. Coops and condos may have additional regulations. You can check a company's licenses here. (The search works best if you put the last name in the licensee field, rather than the business name).

Altman Electric, 212.924.0400. This highly-regarded company has been in business for over 50 years. They offer commercial, residential, and 24-hour emergency service.

Christopher John, 718.389.9898, started in 1998, offers a full range of residential and commercial services. Their site does something we don't recall ever seeing on a NYC service website: they give you profiles of their employees.

Gunzer Electric, 718.392.2219. In business since 1979 residential and commercial, they also install lighting, fire alarms, and security systems. They promise a 30-minute response time in Manhattan for emergencies.

Broadway Under the Stars
If the weather holds, tonight's free concert, 8pm, on the Great Lawn should be wonderful: some of Broadway's best performers will perform numbers from Hal Prince musicals. The lineup includes Elaine Stritch, Donna McKechnie, John Cullum, Manoel Felciano, Rebecca Luker, Bebe Neuwirth, Michael Cerveris, Matthew Morrison, Kelli O'Hara, Lee Ann Womack, Sutton Foster, and Christine Ebersole. That, as they say, is not chopped liver.

Friday's Quiz
Our mail server had some kind of heat stroke on Friday and many of you didn't get our monthly quiz email. For you quiz fans, you can find it, answers removed, here. We'll put the answers back up in the same spot after 3pm today.
