Food Notes
Old New York

Porchetta and Porsena's Sara Jenkins cooks a four-course meal with wine pairings at Eataly on Thursday, July 25, 7pm, $125 all inclusive.

The Museum of Food and Drink is a museum-to-be in NYC about "the culture, history, science, production, and commerce of food and drink." Great idea. Even though a building is still far in the future, they're kickstarting their first exhibit.

Another project you should know about… The Slow Food group has created the Ark of Taste, a catalogue of rare regional foods in danger of extinction. Local Harvest has listings of farmers who grow or make these foods. [Image of Moon & Stars Watermelon: Black Eiffel]

Finally on MenuPages: Queens!

At Harold Dieterle's The Marrow
on July 12, the chef prepares
an Austrian repast to go with
Emmerich Knoll Rieslings and Gruners. $100

Andrea Frost's Through a Sparkling Glass: An A-Z of the Wonderland of Wine, takes a refreshingly non-didactic approach to the joys of wine, focusing less on things like maceration and meditating more on its pleasures.

Beer more your thing? Greenpoint's Tørst, 615 Manhattan [Nassau/Driggs] 718.389.6034, instantly became one of the city's best places to drink beer when it opened in March. On July 16, they're adding Luksus to the same site: 26 seats, five-course tasting menus with beer, chef Daniel Burns.

Ditch Plains, 100 W. 82 [Col/Amst] 212.362.4815, is fixing a New England crab boil on July 18 and again on August 15. Maryland blue crab will come with corn on the cob and jalapeno hushpuppies. $40

No doubt it's on your calendar already, but July 22 is Japanese eel day. They'll be celebrating at Mitsuwa in Edgewater.

Finally, dessert. The Wandering Eater has a report on Nolita's A.B. Biagi, 235 Eliz [Houston/Prince] 212.219.8094, and its delicious gelato.

Metropolitan Opera House, Broadway and 39th, around 1912
