Shalom Japan, 310 S. 4th [Rodney] 718.388.4012, is a Brooklyn cross-pollination, "authentically inauthentic" in their words, from chef-owners Aaron Israel and Sawako Okochi. Sake kasu challah is one of the clearer hybrids; many tilt one way or the other, more often toward Japan. For brunch, we propose a chawanmushi with matzoh brei.

The mission of the Gohan Society is to celebrate Japan's culinary heritage. They're having their Aki Matsuri fundraising event celebrating autumn with food and drink on November 7 at Brooklyn Brewery. Tickets are $125.

At the Astor Center on Saturday, October 19, the Cellar Master from Ruinart will pair their Champagne with a three-course brunch cooked by chef Michelle Bernstein. There are two seatings, 11am and 1pm, $99.

A Julia Child Dinner of French classics will be taught at Brooklyn Kitchen by chef Kate Duff. Saturday, November 16, 2pm, $85

Reservations are getting tough at Piora , 430 Hudson [Leroy/Morton] 212.960.3801, thanks to the food of Chris Cipollone and watchful eye of Simon Kim. The delicious food is Italian with a little bit of Korean, a little bit of elsewhere.
