Gregory Maguire

This is the time to curl up with Gregory Maguire.

Mr. Maguire, author of Wicked, the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, has a new book out called Mirror Mirror (Regan Books, $24.95). In it, Snow White finds herself in 16th century Italy, under the care of Lucrezia Borgia, who was not known for her parenting skills.

Meanwhile, over on Broadway…The Gershwin Theatre isn't the best place to curl up, never having met a show it liked. Nevertheless, the new musical "Wicked," based on Mr. Maguire's reimagined Oz novel, is in previews there. With Stephen Schwartz, Winnie Holzman, Joe Mantello, Wayne Cilento, and Eugene Lee as key players on the creative team, and Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Carole Shelley, Norbert Leo Butz, and Joel Grey starring, it's the most talent-laden and ambitious new Broadway musical in many seasons.

Since it's in previews, all we'll say is that we're rooting for this one, and that Menzel and Chenoweth deliver bring-down-the-house performances. Tickets are available at 212.307.4100 and at

On Monday, October 27th at 6:30pm, Mr. Maguire will be at the Lincoln Square Barnes and Noble with cast members from "Wicked."
