Hot List

Extra Virgin, 259 W. 4th [Perry/Charles] 212.691.9359. Chef Joey Fortunato has always been underrated: over the course of several restaurants, we've always eaten well when he's in the kitchen. And he's playing to his strength with this Mediterranean menu. Entrees average $18.

Five Ninth, 5 9th [Little W. 12th] 212.929.9460. The Meatpacking District may have become unbearable come nightfall, but brave the crowds for Zak Pelaccio's cooking. His style spans the globe, though he clearly has an affinity for Asian ingredients. Entrees average $21.

Highline, 835 Wash [Gansevoort] 212.243.3339. From the Spice and Peep peeps: a Thaifusiony menu, cool decor, and a major waterfall. Entrees average $15.

Kittichai, 60 Thompson [Spring/Broome] 212.219.2000. For the 60 Thompson hotel, Robin Leigh (co-owner of BondSt and Town) has imported popular Bangkok chef Ian Chalermkittichai. You'll find traditional dishes, variations thereon, and special dishes such as roasted Bangkok duck. Opening 7/3.

Per Se, 10 Col Circle [60th] 212.823.9335. Thomas Keller (The French Laundry) returns to New York with the most anticipated restaurant opening of the year. Five courses, $125.

Pure Food and Wine, 54 Irving [17th/18th] 212.477.1010. Matthew Kenney takes it raw.

Vela, 55 W. 21st [5th/6th] 212.675.8007. The latest in a long string of Japanese-Brazilian restaurants…oh, wait, no. The first of what is not going to be a long string of Japanese-Brazilian restaurants. Merry date night. Entrees average $14.

V Steakhouse, 10 Col Circle [60th] 212.823.9500. J-G V's new place at the TWC. V. gd stk, V for Vegas decor, or maybe Vargas girls.
From a subscriber: The new Turkish place Zeytin, 519 Col [85th] was quite surprisingly amazing — some of the best Middle-Eastern-inspired food I've had in the city. Better than Moustache downtown, better than Beyoglu across the park.
