Irene's Aftermath
St. Mark's Bookshop On the Ropes
Every Person in New York

There's probably a lot on your plate right now. But one thing that's not on your plate is all the produce there should be from local farmers.

That's because Hurricane Irene did serious damage to crops on farms that stock our greenmarkets. The "green" peppers above are from Conuco Farm in New Paltz. It's like that all over.

You can help in a number of ways.

One thing you can do is to give your favorite Greenmarket farmers some extra business—they need it.

You can also donate to the Greenmarket's Hurricane Irene Relief Fund. 100% of funds donated will go directly to farmers affected by Irene. Donations of $50 or more get you a choice of one of the wonderful posters illustrated by Claudia Pearson, pictured below.

Bid in the auction organized by Just Food, which will raise money for their organization and for local farmers affected by Irene.

And on Sunday, September 25th, if you have dinner at one of the restaurants participating in Dine Out Irene, 10% of sales will go to Irene disaster relief. (And if you're a restaurateur reading this, get on board.)

Hey, Cooper Union.

Congratulations and all on your new (2009), fashionably-slashed building on Third Avenue. Just north of you, though, your tenant—the great, essential, beloved St. Mark's Bookshop—is struggling to stay in business, given the market rate you're charging them.

Bookstores are on the ropes, but you, CU, can stem the tide of their disappearance by putting the common good over the bottom line. Since you're big on slashes — how about slashing their rent?

MUG readers can sign the petition to help save the bookshop. Pass it on.
