Laura Tonatto Perfumes

They call her "The Italian Nose."

Laura Tonatto was born in Turin in 1963 and honed her perspicacious proboscis in Grasse. Since then, she's designed scents inspired by literature (Madame Bovary, for one), perfumes designed to be worn with cashmere, recreated Syrian Water from the 1st Century B.C., and created fragrances for Giorgio Armani.

She has a passionate following in Italy for her complex and thrilling fragrances, but only a cult following here since the line has been difficult to get. As of this week, though, it's available at Barney's.

Especially popular is Oltre, "a breath of the ocean," according to Ms. Tonatto, it consists of coastal pine, lily of the valley, seaweed, and musk and roughly 175 other natural ingredients. (Barney's is still waiting on the Oltre). Also in high demand are Dama, and Rè for men. In addition to the perfumes there are room fragrances, oils, and candles. Eau de parfum, 100 ml, is $90.
