Less is More Week: Home

We're not thinking of Less is More as some self-denial koan. Instead, we're taking this week on MUG to round up sources, brick and mortar or digital, where the ratio of value for dollar is high. Today, stuff for the home.

At Northeast Floor Covering, 1492 1st [77th/78th] 212.988.5326, rugs, wall-to-wall, and remnants at attractive prices.

Yes, you can find some painfully ugly bedding at Target, so you'll need to spend a few minutes browsing through the large number of options on their website to come up with something you like. But you will.

A stroll around the Bowery will do wonders for your kitchen without doing serious damage to your wallet. Check out Leader Trading, 191 Bowery [Delancey/Rivington] 212.226.070, among others.

In that sweet spot of a selection-to-prices-to-service matrix, it's hard to beat Vercesi Hardware, 152 E. 23rd [Lex/3rd] 212.475.1883. Though it's far smaller, we'd choose it over Home Depot any day, a store which, as longtime readers of MUG know, is riddled with complaints and questionable business practices.

These days, there's no percentage in being an IKEA snob. For one thing, buying decorative hardware here can save you a bundle. For another, their vast range of lamps and other lighting options just can't be beat for style and value.

Home Office
The online-only Quill has excellent customer service, but it's really all about the savings. Small example: 3M Scotch Tape 1/2"x450", dozen pack at Staples: $24.99. Quill sells it for $19.08. The company offers frequent special deals, as well as free shipping with orders of $45 or more.

Indispensable Emporium
At Pearl River, 477 Bway [Broome/Grand] 212.431.4770, woks, candles, tea strainers, room dividers, folding tables, soaps, blinds, slippers, mobiles, baby blankets, and vases. To name a few.

Indispensable Decorating Source
Nearly every day we find something on Etsy to covet – there's an amazing range of handmade items at unbeatable prices. As you'd expect, some is pretty darn crafty and not in a good way. Many items, though, are imaginative, stylish, and well-made.

Indispensable Website
No website touches Apartment Therapy in its usefulness for home design. Great resources from the editors, from links to design blogs, and from reader feedback. Don't stay home without it.

Good experience in business, technology, art, society, and life is the umbrella under which the Gel has its annual two-day conference, this year on April 30th and May 1st. But 'conference' makes it sound far too stuffy. It's actually a fantastic lineup of people and events, and yes, experiences. Take a look at the speakers here, and the choice of events available.
