Every Person in New York

The first thing that will strike you about Astoria's Lockwood 32-15 33rd St. [Bway/ 34th Ave.] 718.626.6030, in warmer weather at least, is that it looks like a stage set from the street.

Under a jaunty, striped awning, the wide-open proscenium seems to jut out to the sidewalk. Two steps extend along the width of the storefront where they've broken the 'fourth wall'. You can't not enter.

You'll be glad you did. Mackenzi Farquer ran SITE, a popular store that was a few blocks away. She closed it, renamed it and moved to this appealing side-street location in the fall of 2013. They're planning an outpost in Jackson Heights to open in late summer.

Ms. Farquer still sells thoughtfully chosen pieces of furniture, bright pillows and throws, kitchenware, clothing for moms and kids, I Heart Astoria t-shirts, toys, books, bags, jewelry, greeting cards and plenty of accessories that would make great gifts. Framed prints adorn the walls. Many of the items here are made by talented local artisans.

Nice stuff, nice staff. If Lockwood looks like a stage, it also looks like a long run.

Jason Polan started Every Person in New York in March of 2008. He plans on working on the project until it is finished. Look for Every Person in New York on Tuesdays in MUG and daily at Jason's site.
